Medicinal Therapies

Maeve Nov 2018-37.jpg

I offer a range of other medicinal therapies in combination with acupuncture to provide you with all round support.

Chinese Massage (Tui Na)

Tui Na is a targeted therapeutic massage directly addressing an area of concern.

This massage approach can help with a range of health problems. These include:

  • Boosting low mood, reducing stress and anxiety and helping insomnia.

  • Musculoskeletal disorders such as frozen shoulder, whiplash injury, chronic back pain, sciatica

  • Digestive system disorders such as IBS and constipation

  • Reproductive system and endocrine system disorders such as menopausal hot flushes and PMT

  • Tui Na can ease stress from tense muscles, and can comfort, soothe and uplift.

Microsystems

Using the best of traditional medicine with modern medical understanding, I combine traditional acupuncture points as used in Traditional East Asian Medicine, with modern microsystems such as scalp, abdominal and auricular acupuncture.

  • Scalp acupuncture is effective for neurological conditions including symptoms of stroke, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. I am a member of the Institute of Scalp Acupuncture UK.

  • Abdominal acupuncture is generally a very comfortable treatment. There is some evidence of its effectiveness for treatment of insomnia and stroke, and combined with traditional acupuncture for pain.

  • Auricular acupuncture is well known for treatment of addictions, post-traumatic stress disorder and for pre and post embryo transfer to enhance fertility. It includes ‘battlefield acupuncture’ for pain relief.

Electroacupuncture

Electroacupuncture ‘super charges’ your acupuncture treatment and has been shown to be more effective than manual acupuncture for some conditions. Very carefully chosen pairs of needles are connected to a device that delivers precisely controlled pulses of low voltage electricity.

Electroacupuncture can help to reduce pain and inflammation, helps repair nerve damage, relaxes tense muscles, reduces stress, and restores health and well-being. Electroacupuncture can be used for:

  • ï‚· Musculoskeletal conditions such as back, neck, shoulder or elbow pain.

  • ï‚· Osteoarthritis

  • ï‚· Trigeminal neuralgia

  • ï‚· Peripheral neuropathy

  • ï‚· Stroke

Moxibustion Therapy

Moxibustion is a Traditional East Asian technique that involves the burning of the dried leaves of the mugwort plant to facilitate healing. It has anti-inflammatory actions for arthritis. It is used to warm the uterus to treat some types of infertility. It can even be used to encourage breech babies to turn.

Recent clinical studies found that moxibustion boosts the immune system and enhances physiological functions. The charity Moxafrica, which aims to research the use of moxibustion for drug resistant TB in resource poor countries, recently looked at the effects of moxibustion for symptoms of long covid. They concluded that this therapy can be useful as it enhances the immune response.

Cupping

Cupping therapy, as well as being a modern trend, is an ancient form of medicine in which glass cups of various sizes are placed on the skin for a few minutes to create suction. People have cupping to increase the blood flow to painful constricted areas, helping reduce pain and for relaxation and well-being. Cupping feels like massage.
